7 Ways to Lower Your Heating Bill in Daytona Beach During the Winter

    “It’s really the big thing homeowners forget about,” said Jim Hughes, senior manager of education and training at Service Experts. “The more loaded up the filter is, the less air is able to be filtered through it and actually warm the home. A clogged filter makes your HVAC system work harder.”

  3. Schedule Regular HVAC Service
  4. It’s common to have an Expert come by your house in the spring for AC service. That way, your system is prepped for the heat.

    But don’t overlook scheduling an appointment for furnace service before it snows too.

    Among other actions, an inspection usually involves:

    • Double-checking thermostat settings
    • Cleaning and greasing internal pieces

    It’s not a bad idea, but dual-pane windows provide superior insulation for keeping chilled air where it belongs.

    When you install double-pane windows, your energy savings could be 25% or greater.


  7. Regulate Use of Vented Appliances
  8. If you need the exhaust fan while cooking, Hughes suggests against leaving it running for a long time.

    The same goes for for the dryer. Don’t allow it to work after your clothes are done.

    Any venting appliance or exhaust fan pulls out heated air outside and increases cold air. Using these appliances longer than needed will force your furnace to work harder to battle the avoidable chill.

  9. Inspect Your Home’s Perimeter for Cracks
  10. Check your residence’s exterior. This is the area that separates your home from the weather. If there’s a basement, watch for fluttering cobwebs or chilly air leaking in close by the corners.

    Polyurethane products and other options can be used to plug basement walls letting air into your house. Another inexpensive idea is to invest foam seals for fixture bases, like ceiling fans, overhead lights or wall outlets.

    They’re easy to put in and are awesome at blocking cold air in the winter.


  11. Evaluate Insulation Levels in Your Attic
  12. It’s worth ensuring that you have adequate insulation levels in your residence as well. Nine in 10 U.S. residences don’t have enough insulation, according to the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association.

    Hughes recommends looking at the ENERGY STAR® zone map to find the appropriate R-value for your residence’s walls and attic space. This value is based on the geographic area where you live.
